Weekend Reading | 2.22.20

Happy Weekend! This week was def a bit of a doozy for me – I haven’t left the house much as I got really sick on Tuesday and didn’t start to feel better until late Thursday afternoon! Something bad has definitely been going around…. everyone I know has been sick at some point over the past few weeks. The best part of being sick (ha – we’re looking on the bright side) has been all of the TV watching I have gotten up to. I posted to Instagram asking for TV recommendations and got SO MANY from you all. I will definitely be going back to that post and working my way through the list.

Dear lord… Love is Blind. That show, just wow. I am completely up to speed and just… wow. Dreading/eagerly anticipating the finale next week. I’m also watching The Outsider (a Steven King horror show) which is fantastic. I don’t have much planned this weekend so it will prob be a quiet one of reading/yoga/getting caught up on work and tax prep.. which is just what I’m craving right now! Hope you have a good one, whatever you’re up to!

How to read more!

Another reason to love Olay. No more retouching!

I ordered these catnip wine bottle toys for Tyrion this week… so funny! They’d make a great gift.

What is going on with our necks!?

Very into these tiny gold hoops.

Loving Delta’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral.

I’m sorry you got sick this week, definitely going around here too! I want to share a bit (I hope) of constructive criticism, as I saw in one of your IG stories you said you might have the flu. While I have no idea of your diagnosis and if you went to the doctor, “I have the flu” is thrown around SO much, and is actually cause for so few people getting the flu vaccine each year. What people *usually* mean, is that they have a cold. Having a flu (i.e. influenza) is much more serious, and requires a diagnosis from a doctor. I know you (and everyone else) means no harm by this, but it puts into our heads that the flu is just a stuffy nose, cough, headache, and will go away in a few days by its own. Just something to think about since you have such a large platform!

Love your posts and especially weekend roundups, always start my Saturday here!

Thanks for the feedback! It actually wasn’t a cold, but appreciate the clarification 🙂

I am so happy about the MMLafleur story about politicians but it is bittersweet to me after hearing their announcement to discontinue efforts at maintaining inclusive sizing and a commitment to their plus size customers. I’m cuspy – size 14/16 – and MMLafleur has been a god-send to me for dressing for work. I was part of their Kizukai styling group for frequent purchasers and participated in surveys thinking they were going to expand their size-inclusive offerings. I have to say, it made me feel so sad and just bad about myself that they aren’t committed to their plus line. I understand corporate profits, but it is hard when someone gives you something and then takes it away. It is also hard to see that they have profiled plus women in their recent ads yet aren’t fully committed to dressing them. I absolutely love MMLafleur, but definitely a bit heartbroken over this decision. And I don’t think the answer of we have a select few pieces in plus is the solution. It’s no different than plus size customers being relegated to one or two choice selections for the last 20-30 years. I don’t know that I have a solution, but it just feels so hard to me. I immediately thought “I have to lose 20 lbs to fit into their 14s to able to have a selection” and I worked on myself for a lot of years to avoid thinking that way. Sorry to complain. I’m not trying to hate them. If anything, their company felt like my safe zone where I could buy within their plus and core ranges freely without feeling “othered”. Just felt bad after the announcement; oddly, have a bit of a lump in my throat as I am writing.

Le sigh. First world problems, I know.

Aw that is such a bummer – I actually hadn’t seen the announcement! I don’t know what to say other than try not to let it make you feel bad about yourself… it’s a (sucky) decision made by the brand and has absolutely nothing to do with you! Probably easier said than done, I am sure. 🙁 And I’m sure you know this already, but I am a big fan of Universal Standard for similar(ish) workwear styles. Definitely check them out if you have not already!

Jen, I am not sure if you are familiar with Alison Gary’s awesome Wardrobe Oxygen blog, but if not, she did a pretty thorough look at plus-size work wear today that might be helpful: https://www.wardrobeoxygen.com/where-to-shop-for-plus-size-workwear/

I think one of the brands she looks at is MM LaFleur but she profiles several others as well–hopefully there are some options there to help you feel chic right as you are right now–which we all deserve! I have a feeling you are stunning! 🙂

Thanks for the ‘Love is Blind’ recommendation! (I think, because I just watched all 8 episodes which killed a lot of time I didn’t really have), but WOW! I was hooked right out of the gate Glad to know the finale is soon!
