Weekend Reading 11.16.24

Hello from LA. Yesterday was my boyfriend’s birthday. Weather permitting, we have a few fun things planned. Whatever you are up to, I hope it’s wonderful. Also! When I mentioned wanting to learn to make homemade bread, everyone on Substack said to make this focaccia! (I served it with this soup, one of my all-time favorite recipes.) It was the perfect cozy dinner. Enjoy this week’s list.

Thank you for sharing another amazing list. The Planned Parenthood President letter is especially important for me to read today. Still struggling with not just the election results, but the overall state of our country-the “us vs. them” has never felt more apparent than it does right now. I have read reports on the increase in anti-women sentiment on social. I worked for Planned Parenthood for several years (legislative work/lobbying) and sure miss the connections and camaraderie that I had at the time. It made things feel less scary when I was surrounded by “allies”. I am no longer on social (not since 2016 when I discovered how many people I knew were not “my people” after all). Reading articles like this one you shared helps me stay hopeful and engaged in the seemingly never-ending battle for our equal rights. Okay, now off to shop that Hill House sale. I have my eye on one of those robes!

Before you watch Say Nothing, I highly recommend the book!! One of the most riveting non-fiction reads of all time. Patrick Radden Keefe is one of the greats.

Also came to recommend the book first! Listened to it on audible and was blown away. Easily one of my top nonfiction reads of all time.

Have you read “Say Nothing”? It’s FANTASTIC but took me a long while to get into it. The new Hulu show looks pretty accurate to the book. I find there to be a serious lack of documentaries on the Troubles and I hope this scripted movie helps tell the story.
