SS Fit Files No. 5

Gym1

This week was all about yoga. I did something a little bit crazy and signed up for Yoga Vida‘s 30 days of Yoga challenge through the BurnThis App. I started it on Tuesday…. yoga every single day until I leave for Tulum! It bugs me when people say that yoga is not a good work out. If you say this, I think this means that you are either in extraordinarily good shape {and then, good for you… I will shut up!} or have never taken Flow at Yoga Vida. I’m addicted and personally find it to be really challenging. You’re up, you’re down. The flow gets really intense at times but just as you think you are going to die, the stretching + balance parts begin. By the end of the class I’m standing up two inches taller, drenched in sweat, and thoroughly stretched out. My kind of workout. Anyway, if any NY’ers are reading this and are as crazy as I am, I definitely recommend taking BurnThis’s challenge. It’s for the month of March but I started mine a few days early as I leave for Tulum at the end of the month.

Besides yoga {5 straight classes!} I also tried my first ever Spin class. On Sunday, Cyc Fitness treated me + a bunch of my friends to a complimentary class. I actually really loved it. It was a killer work out but not as scary as I had imagined. Cyc is doing a deal on Gilt City this week and I bought it… five classes for only $85 which is such a good deal if you compare it to Soul Cycle or Flywheel… so I guess now I’m going to get {sort of} into spinning! I’ll always be more of a barre/yoga girl but I think its fun to mix up your workouts to keep things interesting.

This week’s fitness resources:

  • I would probably never {ever} try Naked Yoga but I still thought this post was an interesting read.
  • I became really curious to try CityRow after reading this… I booked a class to try it next Sunday!
  • I bought Juice Generation’s cookbook…errr… juice book? I’m having fun plotting out next week’s juices.
  • In the photo above I am wearing a Lululemon tank and Old Navy leggings. I love the ruching at the ankles.
  • I know I’m going to Tulum in a few weeks but now I am dying to go here! Doesn’t it sound dreamy?

Are you doing a yoga/spa retreat in Telum? I’d love to hear where you’re going. I’ve been looking around at places, but there are so many! I don’t know how to choose.

I’m not! A friend and I are just doing a long weekend at the Papaya Playa. I’ll definitely find a yoga class or two to take while there, though. But if you are looking to do a yoga retreat, I hear Amansala is amazing!!

I totally agree about yoga being such a good workout! I was a division I college athlete and still lift weights, run and do interval training daily, but yoga always kicks my booty! Regardless of how in shape I think I am, I always find yoga classes to be challenging!

Also I know you haven’t even left yet, but I am already excited to see a recap of your Tulum trip! ๐Ÿ™‚

I am so jealous of all of the fitness options you have in NYC! Glad to hear that you gave spinning a try. It’s a great cardio workout thats low impact.

I’ve personally never been a huge fan of yoga but I’m thinking of giving it another try after following your challenge posts ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s all about finding workouts that you like and it’s great that you’re doing that. Most people try one thing and just assume they are not meant to be fit! Naked Yoga sounds scary btw.

i can’t imagine anyone who thinks yoga is not a good workout! i’ve done crossfit & long distance triathlons, and would take those over yoga any day haha! i feel really good afterwards but it is SO hard.

There is always a trade off between strength and flexibility so it makes sense as a triathlete you find yoga difficult. I was a gymnast growing up and naturally very flexible – I don’t find yoga to be that difficult overall. But in the recent years that I’ve been running & doing tri’s, I also find yoga to get more and more difficult! At least it keeps things interesting!

I just took my first class at Yoga Vida last Friday and I loved it! I’m pretty regular with yoga, but this was one of my favorite classes in a long time. I can’t wait to try out more of their classes. I just signed up for a Classpass so I should be able to try lots this month.

I’ve always wanted to do a yoga challenge but I’ve never found a studio that was convenient for me to attend so frequently. + Glad you loved spin too!

I love spin! I’ve been spinning for 4 years and I love the endorphins. It’s a great way to burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time.

So many people ( and sadly) instructors miss the point of Yoga. Yes, Yoga is a kick ass work out. It also heals your mind and your spirit. It is not a competition, it is personal to each individual. It truly is a whole body workout. Good for you Grace. I wish I was going to Tulume too! Definately have to plan that!
