Moody Summer Hues: How I Navigate “Fall” Style Living in the South

Moody Summer Hues

There’s a very specific kind of heat in Charleston right now. It’s heavy and humid, and no matter how many times I shower, I never quite feel clean. We’ll be in this condition for the next couple months, even in September. I’ll see all my girlfriends in New York wearing cute sweaters and boots. Starbucks will be unveiling their seasonal offering. Meanwhile, I’ll be down here, sweating through my linen!

The answer? Summer clothing, in fall colors. I’ve been scouring the web for moody summer hues. Deep, rich fall tones, in lightweight silhouettes. Think gauzy fabrics, cotton minis, smocked dresses, open-toe sandals… just all in a palette that reassures you that cooler days are on their way (even if the leaves aren’t turning and the AC is still on full blast).

Moody Summer Hues

The Hill House Cosima Mini Nap Dress (in Black Cisco Trellis) is one of those pieces. The print is perfectly transitional—especially paired with a bold flat or a beaded necklace for a pop of texture. It’s breezy enough for 90-degree days but reads like early autumn.

Here are a few other pieces I’ve been loving in this space between seasons.

Dresses & Easy Pieces

  • Madewell Melody Mini – I just got this. The fit is great, and that deep fig color is just stunning.
  • Dôen Quinn Dress – My favorite cut (size down). The eyelet actually works to add a layer of texture that feels seasonally appropriate.
  • Merlette Gaea Dress — smocked, but sophisticated. Color and cut are both perfect. Definitely a splurge, but gorgeous.
  • La Ligne x Diana Agron Audrey Dress — more of a special occasion piece, but absolutely dreamy. This collab felt a little random to me, but I love the pieces.

Accessories That Make It Feel Fall

Even though I might not be breaking out my sweaters just yet, dressing in these deeper shades helps me feel a bit more “fall,” without totally overheating. If you’re in the same boat (read: melting), I highly recommend giving this palette a try. No need to rush into boots and coats—just swap your brights for berries, bronzes, navy blue, and blacks. Think of it as a little sartorial trick to ease into the season, one smocked mini at a time.

Outfit Details: Hill House dress, Madewell Sandals (can’t recommend these enough, + they are on sale), Celine Sunglasses, Studio Sensi Tote

As someone who also lives in the south, I highly relate to this post 🙂 Late August and into September I break out all of my darker minis and sleeveless tops!

Love this! I live in Atlanta and have had similar thoughts as a NY gal – what a great way to incorporate fall! I just received my order of the most adorable black eyelet mini dress from Farm Rio (on sale! Shopbop) in breezy cotton but with tights and a boot and a cardigan can easily take me through our mild start to winter.
    Bonus hides the sweat haha.
    Cheers!

Yes, truly a bonus to hide the sweat! It’s been so hot here, I imagine Atlanta is even hotter!

Believe it or not, I find this round-up very useful here in San Francisco! Our climate is typically cold & foggy in July & August, then in September & October we tend to get some heat waves. Even if it’s appropriate for the weather, I feel ridiculous wearing bright summer colors when it’s autumn according to the calendar, so lightweight clothing in more ‘moody’ autumnal hues is essential to my wardrobe!

(I also feel ridiculous wearing ‘winter’ clothing in July, so the other thing I’m always after is long-sleeved stuff in light summery colors, not deep jewel tones…)
