Activewear Refresh

There is no better motivation to get to the gym than cute new workout gear! Let it be said: I am 100% pro-leggings. More on that in today’s Subsack. I am seeing all of this anti-leggings nonsense out there (even The WSJ ran an article saying you’re a boomer if you wear leggings!?), and I laugh because I cannot imagine back-squatting in anything other than leggings or bike shorts. The same goes for running or Pilates. I cannot imagine working out in baggy pants–or shorts over leggings! Fortunately, I live in Charleston and this trend hasn’t hit us just yet, so I don’t have to think about this too hard. Below are some of my own activewear MVPs.

My uniform these days is a monochromatic base layer (favorite workout tee, favorite leggings) with a big sweatshirt or hoodie over it (I’ll size up to an XL for this layer). White socks (scrunched down just a bit), white sneakers . . . we’re good to go! It’s easy, it’s something I feel good wearing, and (most importantly) it’s no-nonsense and practical for the workouts I am doing!

Very much pro-leggings for workouts, it’s just so much easier that way! Especially when lifting.
You wrote in a post a few days ago that you’re working on push ups, and I have a tip! I have weak wrists, so I do push ups while holding a dumb bell. Being able to push down on it with my hand in a fist like formation makes push ups so much easier, I wondered if this might work for you. Good luck!

This is such a good reminder as my trainer has me do this when I work out at the gym. Need to do it at home too. Thank you!

Being “pro-legging” doesn’t mean that those not wearing leggings aren’t working out as hard.

I just think it’s gotta be hard with all that extra fabric! Have a nice day!

Can I add a note from those of us who are not pro-legging? Those of us that don’t have slim legs (or a shapely butt – no more how long the t-shirt) just feel a tad more confident in sweat pants. No, not the super baggy ones, but more like yoga pants; fitted enough to exercise without restraint, but baggy enough not to show every bulge. Does it look dated or frumpy? I don’t think so, and in the age of clothing that enhances every aspect of your bottom- good or bad, I’ll take my active-wear pants.
