6 Makeup Artist Approved Products for Radiant Skin.

It’s no secret that I’m a little (okay a LOT) obsessed with skincare and taking good care of my skin. The right skincare products can tackle your biggest concerns! In all honesty, I never had really thought much about how skincare can work with your makeup until more recently; mostly because I’ve been getting my makeup done so much this month for my podcast live shows!

I personally think that one of the best things you can do to get better at doing your own makeup is to have a pro do it for you. I always feel a little bit badly for my makeup artists as I GRILL them about what products they are using, what tools I need, how I can do the amazing thing they’re doing to me at home, and so on and so forth. Annoying for them. But great for me, and great for you too as today (in partnership with Sephora)  I’m going to talk a bit about two tricks I’ve learned.

The first is covering up dark under eye circles when you have a bit of texture (fine lines and dryness); and the second is getting that lit from within glow. It’s amazing how adding a few special products to your arsenal can make SUCH a dramatic difference. Think of it as makeup prep. It’s a quick extra step after you finish your regular skincare but before you apply makeup.

OK let’s talk about dark circles!

I mentioned this on the podcast but I have this one very honest friend who I frequently ask if I need to “do anything” to my face (meaning Botox or fillers). I know that’s a tough question to ask but IMO we need people like that in our lives to keep it real with us!

She was like… “you have great skin but whyyyyy don’t you use undereye concealer!?” I explained that I felt it aged me – concealer always gets in my fine lines and looks all dry and cakey. So my solution was to just really moisturize that area but yes; I’d skip concealer. I talked to my friend Cassandra who is a makeup artist about this (more on episode 57 of our podcast) about it and she recommended using a more lightweight eye cream that will work better with my concealer. This blew my mind! I still like a heavier eye cream for bedtime but this small trick makes such a big difference.

OLEHENRIKSEN Banana Bright Eye Crème is formulated SPECIFICALLY to work with your concealer to smooth and prep the undereye area while also reducing the look of dark circles. This makes such a noticeable difference for me – it hydrates and brightens the area and prevents under eye concealer from settling into fine lines. I use it with NARS’ Creamy Concealer every morning for instant brightening! Another lightweight eye cream that I’ve been loving is Korres Black Pine 3D Sculpting, Firming & Lifting Super Eye Serum.

Next, we are going to talk about getting that “lit from within” glow.

I’m going to tell you about three products I really love; though keep in mind you don’t need all three… pick one, depending on what you want/need!

For when you want a little glow… I’ve always been a big fan of highlighter but I didn’t realize til recently how helpful an illuminating moisturizer can be PRE foundation/tinted moisturizer to add subtle glow. I love GLAMGLOW GLOWSTARTER™ Mega Illuminating Moisturizer – my shade is “nude glow”. I will apply a thin layer all over my skin before makeup for a subtle glow. And honestly, there are a lot of days where I don’t wear any foundation so I will just use this + maybe a little bit of bronzer. It’s also very hydrating and helps to restore skin’s moisture balance

And then there are the primers… here are two that I really love.

If I am wearing foundation/more face makeup, I love OLEHENRIKSEN’s Banana Bright Primer. It’s packed with vitamin C and brightening pigments for instant radiance. While testing this one, one of the big standout things about it was that I realized how much longer my makeup stays on when I use it. It helps smooth fine lines to prep skin for foundation, it delivers a nice subtle glow, and it DEFINITELY helps to extend the wear of foundation/concealer/etc. It’s a wonder product and great for everyday.

When I want extra glow (for a big night or live show), I looooove Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonderglow Primer. This stuff is magical and one of Cassandra’s obsessions. It’s PACKED with light reflecting particles for the ultimate in radiance! For everyday I will often just use this as highlighter (over makeup or skipping makeup altogether) but for MEGA glow before a big night, you can apply it to your whole face, under foundation.

Sorry I know people are constantly asking you where things are from and it’s annoying… but where is that makeup bag from? I absolutely NEED it!

I totally feel you on the under-eye concealer struggle. And if I use powder to set the concealer, I look even more wrinkly and dry. (How do people ‘bake’ their under-eye makeup and not look chronically dehydrated?!)

I keep hearing buzz about that banana eye cream, and now that you’re signing off on it, I’m in. As soon as I finish the eye cream I’m currently using, I’m going to grab a jar.

      I hope you love it!!!!
FWIW I never “bake” my undereye area – you’re right – it makes you look so wrinkly and dry! If it’s a big night I will set with a little bit of Laura Mercier’s glow setting powder (here: https://shopstyle.it/l/40Jq) but generally would rather just have to reapply than do that.

I really needed that undereye tip, I have the exact same problem, my concealer looks cakey and sets into my fine lines. I have gotten a new eye cream that promises to be the best to wear under makeup but I’ll definitely check out the one you mentioned, it seems amazing.

How would you compare the Charlotte Tilbury primer to the Hollywood filter?

    6.25.19 Reply
    • grace at the stripe:

I would say that the Hollywood Filter is more of a gel consistency (and more pigmented) whereas the primer is more of a liquid. I like to do the wonderglow under makeup and the filter over!

Ok this is off topic but where is the chaise you’re sitting on from? I have been looking for one for my bedroom for like a year and they are all so big, but yours looks like the perfect size!

Aw thank you – it’s actually an old family heirloom (it was falling apart) that we had covered in my sister (Rebecca Atwood)’s fabrics.
