As the temperatures cool down, the most popular question in my emails and DMs is back: what to wear to winter wedding (or formal event). And maybe even more importantly, “What the heck do I wear over my dress!?” I have always worn my grandmother’s ancient fur shawl over my dress but today’s roundup features some more practical options. Oversized but elegant coats (like this or this), or a blazer that looks borrowed from your date. (Size up for a comfy fit.) Let’s dive in.

• First of all, Carly found this black dress at Banana Republic and I was SO impressed. It’s so elegant. It’s also 50% off right now. Sizes are going quickly but if yours is in stock it feels like a no brainer. The sort of dress you can dress up or down with different jewelry and accessories.
• Also on the affordable front, how good is this Abercrombie dress? Not the place I’d typically look for a formal dress but wow.
• When it is cold I am partial to a sleeve when I can find something with one, this BHLDN dress comes in so many colors and has a nice kimono-esque sleeve. You’ll be warm.
• I love the idea of wearing this J.Crew top coat in cream. Love a winter white moment.
