Call me boring, but I wholeheartedly believe that basics are the most important parts of a wardrobe. Sure, statement pieces can make an outfit, but you need foundation pieces to tie it all together in a way that fits into real life. It’s not always something fabulous for the ‘gram.
That said, I have mentioned in the past that basics are something to splurge on, which I still believe is true… but if you know where to look, you’ll find splurge-worthy pieces at affordable price points. Take Everlane, for example. Transparent manufacturing practices and lack of wholesale allows the brand to sell their product with a lower overall margin. What does that mean for us? We wind up with better quality pieces for less. Try their impeccable blouses, perfect tees (for under $20!), and classic work trousers.
Also look for luxe fabrications from inexpensive retailers. H&M always has quality pieces in their “premium quality” line, and I always look for suede, leather, and cashmere there, since they’re both textures that always feel luxe, no matter how cheap. Otherwise, make sure you’ve got a great LBD (or two) and some killer jeans, and you’ll be set for whatever life throws at you.
