You guys know that I love using this blog to be a human guinea pig. Testing + trying out new things is my favorite – there’s nothing better than making a fun new discovery. We’ve talked about activated charcoal deodorant and bathing in charcoal, I’ve done charcoal armpit detoxes, tried out charcoal dental floss… the whole thing. So when I found out that Tom’s of Maine had launched a new activated charcoal toothpaste, I had to try it out!
Tom’s of Maine Charcoal Toothpaste Review
Their Activated Charcoal toothpaste has so many amazing capabilities. For teeth, the biggest benefit is that it gently whitens teeth by removing surface stains. It is actually the gentlest charcoal toothpaste among natural brands and the best for tooth enamel based on RDA testing! RDA = Relative Dentin Abrasion, and this means that this toothpaste is formulated to protect your enamel. It is gentle on your enamel and great for everyday use to be safe. There are a lot of brands making charcoal toothpastes but this one is specially crafted for everyday. Charcoal toothpastes are all the rage right now as they can help to whiten teeth the natural way… sweeping away surface stains to reveal brighter, whiter teeth.
But if I was going to test one brand, it would be Tom’s of Maine. It’s made with sustainably sourced plant-based charcoal. Tom’s of Maine is an oral care brand I really trust and that trust actually starts with my mom.
Growing up, we only used their toothpaste.
My mom was a little bit of a trailblazer with both food, beauty, and personal care products. We ate and used mostly organic and natural products, and she started using Tom’s of Maine because she knew that most toothpastes contain artificial sweeteners and wanted to choose the right products for us. (She actually drove 45 minutes to get it – going all the way to the health food shop 4 towns over to buy it!!! I didn’t appreciate this then but now I am so impressed.)
Tom’s of Maine got wind of this (okay I told them!) and sent my mom and I both the new activated charcoal toothpaste. We both love how clean and fresh our mouths felt afterward (it’s the natural peppermint flavor). Besides that clean, fresh feeling we also loved how white our teeth looked. This whitening toothpaste removes surface stains from coffee, red wine, etc. etc. It does an excellent job in my opinion; just as good as toothpastes with much harsher ingredients. I really love that this toothpaste is gentle and safe but also formulated to help restore your teeth to their whitest!
TerraCycle
The best part though (okay maybe second best part, you know I like white teeth!) is that it’s good for you and good for the environment. I really like that it’s safe and GENTLE. The charcoal is sustainably sourced and plant-based, the packaging is fully recyclable through Tom’s of Maine Terracycle collection program, AND 10% of the brand’s profits go back to supporting people and the planet.
It’s made with naturally derived ingredients and there is no SLS, artificial flavors, sweeteners, or preservatives. (There are two versions available based on your personal preferences: fluoride, and fluoride free. I personally use the fluoride version as fluoride is excellent for protecting against cavities.) If you’re looking to prevent cavities this whitening toothpaste is for you!

I’ve always wondered about charcoal toothpaste! Haha, it’s not for me, but thanks for the review! So interesting. 😀

thanks Charmaine – give it a try!!
This product is so interesting to me! I tried their deodorant back in college and didn’t have the best experience, but I actually want to try this one out! I’ve heard so much about charcoal toothpastes.
In all honesty the deodorant wasn’t for me either (deodorant is so personal, it’s all about your body chemistry – my mom loves it!!) but I LOVE this toothpaste!
That seems awesome! I personally need to use a specific toothpaste recommended by my dentist but that seems like a really interesting product and it being sustainable is definitely a plus.
It is! I was definitely a little nervous using a black toothpaste at first but I love it.
I might have to give this one a try! Sounds intriguing! Btw, that photo of you and your mom is too cute!! Your mom is so pretty!

I use both the deodorant and the toothpaste and I love them both! The Kopari deodorant not so much. It is a chemistry thing for certain. You and your mom are adorable! Talk about good genes.

Oops! I just realized both of the ones I have are Schmidt’s! LOL I need to try the Thom’s
The fact you did this post with your mom makes me happy! Like your mother, mine is always ahead of me on natural food and products. I didn’t always appreciate it, but I sure do now!
Yes I appreciate it SO MUCH now!!!!
Just curious – do you use fluoride of fluoride free? I’ve read conflicting info on how important it is and if it can be bad for you.
I have the flouride free one!
So happy to hear about their recycling program as I have wondered how to recycle a plastic toothpaste tube! Just signed up!!

Nothing to lose by trying something new.

So what exactly is the RDA for this toothpaste..? I have not seen what the number actually is, to know how abrasive it actually is or isn’t. If all other charcoal toothpastes are 300+, then having an RDA of 290 means it’s still highly abrasive overall.
