The Overnight Face Mask I’m Loving.

If you read this blog regularly (or follow my insta stories) then you probably know how much I love a good face mask. LOVE. And since I am lucky enough to work from home, I’m often masking + working. Multi-tasking at its finest, right!? Taking care of my skin is a huge priority, especially now that I’m in my mid-thirties. Masks, serums… I’m all in.

But until more recently, the idea of an “overnight mask” was lost on me. If we’re being fully honest the main reason for that is that I hate messes and figured it would rub off on my beloved silk pillowcase. Yuck. I had tried a few, but they mostly just felt like extra thick moisturizers… so why not just use a really good night cream and be done with it?

And then I tried Kiehl’s new Ginger Leaf and Hibiscus Firming Mask and finally understood. Full disclosure, this is a sponsored post, but you guys know I’m picky about which brands I work with, especially when it comes to beauty. I don’t mess around with my skincare. Kiehl’s is one of my all time favorite beauty brands. It was actually the first high end skincare brand I ever tried… back when I first moved to New York, my roommate/bestie convinced me to switch my drugstore moisturizer for their Ultra Facial Moisturizer, which is still one of the products I recommend most whenever you guys ask for a great everyday moisturizer with SPF. And their Powerful-Strength Line Reducing Concentrate is the best product I’ve tried all year (Yes that is a huge statement but it’s the truth! I wrote about it here and it’s changed my skin, making it so much more smooth and actually really does help with fine lines and wrinkles!)

But we’re not here to talk about that. (I did link my other Kiehl’s favorites in the widget at the bottom of the post if you’re interested.) We’re here to talk about the overnight mask! First off, Carter and I filmed a little video about the mask. You can watch it below!

YouTube video

So as I said before I was nervous about mess. This mask is absolutely mess free. I don’t know how they do it, but the mask dries pretty quickly (give it 5-10 minutes), and once it’s dry you are good to go to bed and not worry about it getting on your sheets or pillow. It goes on completely clear and does not budge (I tested this using my fancy silk pillowcase that shows any dirt or oil, and it passed the test – no smudges or rub off!!)

The mask has this really rich, velvety texture and just glides on. You only need to use a little bit, so the jar will last you a long time (which is good, as you can use it 5 nights a week if you want!) As I mentioned in the video, I apply a thin layer all over, spending a little bit of time massaging it in upward strokes and focusing on the areas that need a little help (be sure to get your neck + under the jaw line!) As it dried, I could actually feel it firming my skin – there’s this very slight lifting/tightening sensation that happens.

When you wake up the next day, wash your face as usual (full disclosure: I don’t always wash my face the next day as my evening skincare routine is so comprehensive – usually I will just rinse it off and then apply serum/moisturizer/etc., but you can definitely feel the mask on your face the next day so if you don’t want to wash your face at least give it a good rinse!). I immediately noticed how much smoother, softer, and (most importantly) firmer my skin was the next day. The difference is noticeable – it works!!!

I’m a very big fan of this mask. It’s particularly great when skin needs a little TLC but you don’t have time to do a face mask during regular hours. You can use it 5 nights a week; I did that for the first week of testing but have settled into a nice little routine of alternating this and my beloved Powerful-Strength Line Reducing Concentrate every other night.

Please enjoy this extra close up shot of my skin… kidding, but I wanted you to see the product – you really don’t need a lot.

Grace, just wondering are you using any retinoid or retinol products at night??? I’m trying to find some retinoid/retinol products to stick with for some much needed long term anti aging benefits.

I don’t but I love vitamin C – as mentioned above my nightly routine is alternating between this and the kiehls line reducing concentrate which is amazing.

Mad Hippie vitamin C serum is amazing. I’m 56 , so I need all the help I can get. It’s inexpensive , I typically use it during the day, under my makeup and sunscreen/moisturizer, but I have even used it at night when I’ve run out of my night serum. People tell me I look 10 years and often more! I can’t wait to try the Kiel’s serum, Grace recommended, just waiting until my bottle is empty.

Girl, I’m right there at the age where I clearly need to start finding my night serum and skincare routine. I typically just use lotion and serums, but I love the idea of alternating with this product. Who would of thought overnight masks could be a thing? I’m definitely going to look into getting this product. Thanks so much for sharing your honest opinion!

Do you tone or moisturize before putting on the mask?

    • grace at the stripe:

I don’t use toner but if I did, I would use that before putting on the mask. This mask is pretty hydrating so I just put it on clean dry skin (no moisturizer!)
