We talk a lot about natural deodorants over here. It’s something I’ve gotten pretty passionate about (it can be really hard to find a good one, so I have literally tried them all and feature the best ones for you here). Deodorant is the one item where I will only use a natural one. I am not here to scare you guys but if you keep reading this post I think you will agree with my reasoning.
Back in August, my go-to natural deodorant wasn’t working quite as well and a girlfriend recommended Kopari’s Coconut Deodorant. I wrote about that experience here. Kopari is easily the best and most effective natural deodorant I’ve tried. I haven’t used anything else since mid August (so it’s been about two solid months) and it remains my favorite.
Kopari reached out to me about partnering on a second post (it’s so cool when brands I already love and feature organically without being paid reach out to partner) to drive awareness about their October campaign, which I absolutely LOVE as there is a charitable element AND you guys get a nice discount. First of all, for every Coconut Deodorant sold, the brand is giving $1 to F Cancer. And, with the code THESTRIPE25, you can take 25% off your first deodorant or first deodorant subscription. (Besides the deodorant which we will chat about, the brand has a lot of other amazing products – I love the shower oil and organic body melt!)
Why you should switch to a natural deodorant:
Simply put, there is a lot of bad stuff in most commercial deodorants (especially anti-perspirants), the biggest offender being aluminum.
What’s so bad about aluminum? Watch this video! It blocks your sweat glands which prevents you from sweating. Of course that sounds like a good thing, but sweat is how your body expels toxins on a daily basis. There are several studies that have found aluminum may contribute to the formation of certain cancers and Alzheimer’s disease. When I heard that (years ago) I stopped using deodorants with aluminum immediately. But it’s been a bit of a journey finding one I really like.
And the thing is (and this is important!) it isn’t sweat that causes odor; it’s bacteria. So I’ve found that the way to go is to focus primarily on finding a deodorant that blocks bacteria vs. stopping sweat.
All About The Coconut Deodorant – Kopari
- It’s aluminum and baking soda-free. Baking soda is fine health-wise; but a lot of people experience irritation and get a rash from it. (I personally do not, but have several friends who are scared of natural deodorants because they’ve gotten the baking soda rash.)
- The formula is invisible and totally clear. There’s no white residue. it is not sticky at all, and it will NOT stain your clothes.
- It’s formulated without parabens, phthalates, triclosan and considered clean (in fact, it’s Sephora’s #1 clean deodorant!)
- It glides on very smoothly and the tube lasts forever!
Benefits of Coconut Oil:
Coconut oil is naturally antimicrobial and anti-bacterial, so it naturally kills bacteria-causing odors. It’s also deeply hydrating so it nourishes and protects even the most sensitive skin. It also smells amazing – like sweet coconut milk!
Other Active Ingredients:
The formula contains a 100% plant-based active which provides odor protection while simultaneously warding off the bacteria that cause odor. Sage oil helps aid in sweat and odor reduction; and coconut water is packed with electrolytes, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals.
What People Are Saying:
You can of course read my review of Kopari’s coconut deodorant here. As I’ve said before, it’s the best and most effective natural deodorant I’ve tried. But of course it’s helpful to not just take my word for it as what works for me may not work for everyone! The product has over 1,700 5 Star Reviews and was a 2018 Allure Best of Beauty (the holy grail!) winner. It’s also (as mentioned above) Sephora’s best-selling clean deodorant, which says a lot.
What to know before making the switch!
You might experience a short detox period. Don’t worry – this is totally normal, and it goes away. I went through it when I made the switch years ago, but had no idea what was going on. Here is what to expect.
Stage 1: You may feel a little sweaty and smelly. Your pores are starting to detox and are somewhat plugged.
Stage 2: You might really smell for a few days. Your pits are in full purge mode. I combatted this by sweating it out in the tub (a detox bath or epsom salts are great), and regularly exfoliating my pits. In a pinch, I would rub lemon juice or a cleansing wipe on them to kill the funk and then reapply my deodorant.
Stage 3: You’ll notice you’re smelling better.
Stage 4: You’ll smell great and probably are sweating less. The detox is over! (Get more details on the detox process + how to speed it up here!)
I can’t recommend this product enough. Don’t forget – take 25% off your first deodorant order or subscription with code THESTRIPE25!
