Sassoon Salon Mini-Makeover.

Vidal Sassoon 56th Street 6

A few weeks ago (remember this?), Sassoon Salon + Style Coalition invited me in to the 56th Street Salon for a little mini hair makeover. I’d never been to the salon (but had heard great things about their cuts) so I was excited to see for myself. Initially, I thought that I’d just do a blow out but my hair was so dry that I ended up getting a hydrating treatment and a hair cut too.

I find it very interesting that Sassoon Salon is so incredibly focused upon precision. Stylists receive meticulous training; and every year the salon releases two new collections which allows the stylists to keep adding to their skill sets. Furthermore, each cut is completely customized; and the precision cuts allow for the hair to look great during the growing out phase.

Precision aside, fashion is also a huge focus for the salon… Vidal Sassoon (the man) pioneered the marriage of hair design + high fashion in the late 50’s / early 60’s, and is credited for originating the concept of editorial hair.

When I sat down in the chair, my stylist Bomi immediately began to analyze my bone structure, head shape, and hair texture to determine the cut that would be most flattering and completely personalized to my own hair needs. She determined that my heart shaped face needed a bit more “oomph…” so we decided to add some shorter layers that would hit just above my lips. If you know me, I don’t change my hair length very much (color’s another story) so this was a big/slightly scary decision.

Lucky for me, champagne was involved… making the decision easier. 😉

She also advised a deep conditioning treatment for my parched ends (which I have to say, was kind of awesome… my hair is so much softer for it!)

She did most of the cut while my hair was wet, and then blow dried it smooth… (fun fact: in the spirit of precision, the stylists actually do not use round brushes!) After my hair was dry she did a bit more cutting (mostly the layers in front) and then my favorite part… added some messy waves.

And voila… the after! I was really happy with my experience and will definitely be back for another cut + tretatment. I was happy to hear that cuts start at $98; which (while not cheap) is very affordable for a high quality hair cut in New York City.

The salon is located at 7 West 56th Street (to make an appointment call 212-535-9200.) They also have a downtown location at 32 West 18th Street (phone # is 212-229-2200)

Thank you to Vidal Sassoon & Style Coalition for sponsoring this post.

You look beautiful! There are a few stories about Vidal Sassoon in Grace Coddington’s memoir, and it’s really cool to see how he changed the world of hair. Your eyes just pop in that last photo!

They did an amazing job! It’s been tough for me to find a good hair salon and stylist in the city, so I’m always glad to see recommendations. In the meantime I MUST buy a curling iron, your loose waves are too pretty!
