Platinum, Please.

Sometimes blogging can be really hard. It was especially difficult this past Tuesday, when the Platinum Guild invited me to their Spring event, where we sipped champagne and tried on some of the most exquisite jewelry I’ve ever seen — in my entire life. Just scroll down if you want to see what I’m talking about. And that ring in the third photo? The diamond is real — all seven carats of it. So yeah, that was really hard. Hard not to steal the ring, that is.

While I was at the event, I got to learn a bit more about platinum. I always knew platinum was stronger than white gold, but didn’t know much more than that. So here are a few nerdy details for you that I enjoyed learning. Platinum is typically 95% pure; whereas white gold is actually yellow gold that has been alloyed with another metal (sometimes nickel); and requires rhodium platinum to retain its white color. The main reason platinum is used in diamond + precious jewelry is that it is so dense that the metal lasts forever and won’t wear away over time; making for the most secure setting in the long run. I didn’t know this, but white gold actually loses tiny slivers of metal with every scratch, which is why your jewelry ends up needing to be reset after time.

Beautiful! My engagement and wedding bands are platinum and they only require a bit of professional buffing to make them look as good as new and they are sooo strong!
