Have you guys been watching The Bold Type? It’s a new show on Freeform about three twenty-something girls working at a fashion mag (it’s based on Cosmo – former EIC Joanna Coles is an executive producer!). My best friend and I have been obsessed with it and I have to be honest, it’s with mixed emotions! First of all, we love poking holes in the story line. I mean, the social media “director” of the whole magazine is 25 years old, a little abrasive and a complete know-it-all, and she frequently references being able to buy champagne with her social media salary… (Um, okay, social media jobs actually don’t pay very well!) And then there’s the bit where the editor-in-chief hits publish on a story and we’re like, “that’s not how this works.”
At the same time, it’s more realistic than a lot of other shows (i.e. Younger, another favorite of mine). The cast of Younger is frequently clad in super high-end clothing, whereas in this show we watch Sutton (fashion assistant) struggle with buying a pair of Miu Miu’s when she gets a new job and then returning them.
Anyway, I am now rambling but if you need a new guilty pleasure show, this is it! It’s fun and refreshing and it’s silly but it’s also very relevant (the show tackles issues like politics, sexism, relationships (specifically, our current dating culture and dating more than one person), and what it’s like to be young in New York. I also absolutely love the editor-in-chief (played by Melora Hardin). She’s all at once tough and nurturing and I wish I’d had a boss just like her when I was 25. I will say it makes my friends and I both nostalgic to be young but also relieved to be at an age where we’re a little bit more established in our lives and careers.

Separately, this dress is so fun. It’s the perfect party dress. But more importantly, the new Julie Vos Fall stuff is SO good. I love this cuff (I have it in a few other colors), and I call this link bracelet my Game of Thrones bracelet as it looks like it has dragon scales. O-b-s-e-s-s-e-d… it’s so pretty and looks great with this.

Seems like I have to give The Bold Type a try, despite the flaws you mentioned. I need a brainless TV show to indulge myself in, haha!

Hi Grace! I’m also watching “The Bold Type” & hooked. Love Melora Hardin (the actress & her character). I’m in publishing & also poke holes in certain things on the show but enjoy it anyway. About the clothes: The 3 main characters do, at time wear some high end (to me) clothes, but maybe it’s not as obvious as on “Younger,” which I also love watching. The least appealing character is Kat, with, as you said, her know-it-all quality. But maybe that’s because the character comes from a more privileged background than the other two, as they have pointed out. One more thing about the clothes: Too many crop tops. Even in a creative field like a fashion magazine, seems like a bit much. New game: Take a shot each time you see a crop top at the “Scarlet” office!

We might need to give The Bold Type a try! We have heard a lot about it, but haven’t actually sat down to watch it. We also love this dress! Super cute, and perfect for the end of summer! 🙂

Sounds fun. I love “Younger”, always watch when I need a laugh. I’m obsessed with Project Runway. I did fashion for a short time, so I really feel their pain! Also as a creative, totally relate and love all the interesting challenges they get. It brings me back to my FIDM days in LA. Some years ago there was a “reality ” tv show about opening a restaurant and I used to laugh at the drama they made up( having also worked in that industry) much of it very unrealistic! I love this color on you.
