Our Favorite Outerwear.

trench, bag

Today: a big outerwear edit! The past few weeks have been cooler than usual (at least earlier in the day), and I have to confess: I love it. I don’t get to wear my coats and sweaters very often; it’s great to get to pull them out.

our favorite outerwear

As I said, it is not very cold here most of the time. I’ll typically grab a lighter jacket (like the GOAT Sezane trench… seriously, it is the best, I can’t recommend it enough!) or a light wool jacket. It sounds strange (especially since I hated winter when I lived up North!), but it’s always a bit of a special occasion when I am able to pull out my really warm coats. The weather really cools off in December (and stays cold through February), but the rest of the year; it’s on the warmer side.

I feel really excited about fall’s outerwear. I love all the trends but also the classics. And in this case, there is some overlap between trendy and classic as the classic pieces I grew up wearing as a teenager on Cape Cod are back in style. (I am SO HERE FOR THIS, and that’s probably why I am so into the barn jackets, especially this one!).

Besides my classic trench, I’ve been getting a LOT of wear from this Everlane jacket. It’s perfect. If you told me it was Loro Piana, I would believe you. But no. It’s just over $200! Other notable highlights: this leopard trench is splurgy but magical (I feel like a Hitchcock heroine when I wear it), this camel coat feels so fresh thanks to its drawstring waist, and a truly perfect navy pea coat (it’s so hard to find a frills-free version!). Lastly, I can’t get over how soft this (under $200) windowpane coat is.

Update: Carly influenced me on the chartreuse coat below. It arrived, and it is beautiful, but it’s really thick and heavy (too thick and heavy for Charleston winters), so back to Shopbop it went. It’s gorgeous, though.

I come across very few items where it feels like the line is blurred between wanting and needing. When I tell you I feel like I need almost every one of the coats in this roundup, I mean it. I have been endlessly daydreaming about this statement wool coat and looped Grace into the temptations too, for better or for worse. This funnel-collar coat is so feminine and feels like a timeless piece, while this structured coat struck me as designer (surprise, it’s not)! If we lived in a state that had a more consistent winter, I might be tempted to splurge on this trucker jacket or this Ganni coat, but for now, I love the idea of transitioning this Sezane trench through all seasons. These are the months where I miss life in the North, outerwear has really grown to have a piece of my heart!

  1. Nancy:

I LOVE coats and these are all beautiful. Unfortunately many full length ones only go to a size L and I need a generous XL. Life in Northern IN gets very cold so need warm but do not want a puffer nor do I have an unlimited budget. Any suggestions for a pretty, warm and longer length wool coat. Unfortunately JCrew’s wool coats no longer have Thinsulate as that was my first thought.
