Nailing the Fisherman Aesthetic

When I heard about the “fisherman aesthetic trend,” I had mixed emotions. Mostly, I love it. It feels very authentic to how I dress and the core staples I wear. But I grew up in a restaurant on Cape Cod where the fishermen were constantly coming and going . . . and I giggle because none of them dressed like this. At its core, the “fisherman aesthetic” is really nineties, New England prep. Except maybe the jewelry pieces, but how fun are those!?

I’m mostly just thrilled these things are in style. Cargo pants, fisherman sandals, easy suede boat shoes, Breton tees, cable-knit sweaters, rope bags . . . a classic yellow rain slicker. These are the foundational wardrobe pieces I was raised in, so it is thrilling to me to see them considered a “trend.” This is definitely a “shop your closet” sort of moment for me and I couldn’t be happier about that.
