My Mahjong Setup
I have been getting a lot of questions about my Mahjong setup so wanted to get up a quick post with links to everything. I keep my folding table and chairs in the corner of my porch and pull them out whenever we play. This time of year is absolutely perfect for porch Mahjong (that’s what we did this past weekend, it was heaven!) but the rest of the time I just set everything up in my dining room. You don’t need a folding table (I’ve played at friends’ dining tables a bunch!) but I find playing around a square table makes the setup feel like a true game night.
As far as learning the game! Keep in mind, I’m still pretty new to Mahjong (I learned last August). It is a complicated game but it becomes intuitive with time and regular play. My friends and I just switched to playing with 2024 cards and I feel like my brain has been scrambled. If you are interested in learning to play, I can’t recommend taking in-person lessons enough. Here in Charleston, I took three classes with Holy Mahj. Once you have a few classes under your belt, I highly recommend playing online to familiarize yourself with the different lines. I play using I Love Mahj and find it so helpful.
- Folding Table
- Tablecloth
- Folding Chairs
- Malachite Mahjong Mat
- Green Tile Set (a reader suggested this brand for something less expensive. I’ve also played with this $100 set from Amazon and it’s very good!)
- Rack and Pusher Set
- Tile Shufflers
- 2024 Mahjong cards
- (Not pictured but always present) Drink Tables
PS – for the pool, we use this board. You don’t play with racks and pushers.

I have been thinking about this. Interesting that young people (you!) are starting to play again.
My 90 year old mom has a gorgeous antique set. Thinking about asking her to teach me and some of my friends.
It’s so much fun! The antique sets are TREASURES! You absolutely should ask her!
Love that “younger” people are playing mah jongg! I have my mother’s set from the 50’s and use it every week when we play!
That is so cool! A girlfriend got a vintage set from Etsy and I am jealous. Love that you have a family set.
