We are trying a few new things this week. I watch so much film and television that I thought it would be fun to start a monthly column to talk about it! I’d love for you to leave your recommendations (and what you’re excited about watching), as I love hearing your recs!
Media Diet, September 2025
What I watched This Month:
TV Shows + Mini-Series
Wednesday, Season Two (Netflix)
Wednesday is one of those shows I procrastinate watching (for whatever reason, I wasn’t excited to watch it), but once I settle into it, I love it. And that was the case with season 2. It’s great television. The cinematography is stunning, with a killer cast. Jenna Ortega and Catherine Zeta Jones return but this season we also get Steve Buscemi and Lady Gaga. If you want to transport yourself to a different world with its own set of (fantasmical!) problems, this is the show to watch.
Platonic, Seasons One and Two (Apple TV)
Platonic is just as fun as everyone says it was. It came highly recommended during a TV drought and it definitely delivered. Rose Byrne and Seth Rogan are long-lost besties who fell out of touch, only to reunite in midlife. Their antics are hilarious. This is just something light and fun to watch before bed.
The Girlfriend (Amazon Prime)
If you like dark, twisty, and very messed up, this one is for you. It’s only six episodes, so you can fly through it (I watched it in two sittings). Robin Wright is an overprotective mother who is maybe just a little bit too close to her son. When the son shows up with a new girlfriend, there are a lot of red flags and she becomes convinced that Cherry (girlfriend) has ulterior motives and is using her son. When tragedy strikes, a lie is told, and everything unravels from there.
The Morning Show, Season 4 (Apple TV)
A longtime favorite, I’m so glad it’s back. I am only one episode in (it just came back last week), but I am very much enjoying it and happy it’s back. Feels like a reunion with my old friends. We will see what the fourth season brings.
Black Rabbit (Netflix)
I don’t know–I was so excited for this! It was described to me as The Bear meets Ozark, with a killer cast (Hi Jude Law, Jason Bateman), but I am just not loving it the way that I had hoped to. It lags at times, it can be hard to keep up with, the chemistry with one of the love interests feels off to me . . . I could go on. This is the new show I’d been most excited for, and I’m a hard medium on it (at best!).
Film
The Naked Gun (rented on Apple TV)
I had a girlfriend over for movie night, and we watched this. Honestly? It’s a joy to watch! It’s just silly and clever, and the writing is so quick and snappy. If you aren’t paying full attention, you’ll miss a wordplay. I really loved it and would highly recommend it. Also, does anyone have the scoop on Pamela and Liam? Was it all a publicity stunt, or are they really a thing? I want to believe!
aka Charlie Sheen (Netflix)
I watched this two-part documentary on Netflix when I was sick and was surprised how much I liked it. I had no skin in the game; I’ve always been pretty neutral about Charlie Sheen (though I remember all the “winning” and “tiger’s blood” jokes back in the 2010 era). Honestly, after watching it, I like him. I think I’m a fan? I’m ready to support his comeback. I loved all the nineties nostalgia and family stuff (Martin Sheen is his father and Emilio Estevez is his older brother). By the end, I was downright weepy.
Swiped (Hulu)
This is the Whitney Wolfe movie! I find her career fascinating and enjoyed this. It’s an easy watch, perfect after a long day. I was really surprised by Lily James’ transformation (her voice, her awkwardness!) for the role; and of course Jackson White played (yet another) toxic man. It’s a fun watch and I learned a lot — I think I forgot that Wolfe was a cofounder at Tinder!
What’s coming Next:
I am conflicted on the Wuthering Heights trailer. Margot + Jacob? I’ll definitely watch it. But also, it kind of looks like a hot mess. Guess we will see!
Save the Date
I’ve got these dates saved on my calendar. Maybe you do too!
- October 16th The Diplomat (Netflix)
- October 23rd: Nobody Wants This (Netflix)
- November 12th: Palm Royale (Apple TV)

I think you meant Black Rabbit, but I agree with you…
I am almost finished with it and boy is it dark. Geez.
It’s like a master class in bad decision making. I
omg yes I absolutely did!!!! and couldn’t agree more. Too dark!
I’m excited for this column! I just watched and loved Rivals set in 1980s England about a rivalry between powerful people in media (rich people behaving badly/underdog trying to topple the powerful themes). I’m currently watching Long Bright River – very dark and gripping story that does a good job bringing the book to the screen (murder/suspense). I also just finished the first two episodes of the Hurricane Katrina documentary – Katrina: Come Hell or High Water. Just wow, it’s a really powerful, heartbreaking look at the people of NOLA who survived the storm and how the government and media failed them. I can’t stop thinking about it. On a lighter note, I’m enjoying Platonic and rewatching Younger because I need a little levity in my media diet!
Sometimes rewatching something is just the best. I started rewatching Scandal last night which is very weirdly soothing!
I love this column! I am overwhelmed by all of the options available via streaming, and, have a hard time choosing new shows. I value your opinions and look forward to adding a show or two to my watch list. Thank you for doing the hard work!
So happy to hear it!!!!!
I really like this column! We have very similar taste in books (BOP is how I found you) so I very much trust your opinion on television and film.
oh good! Excited about this!
Robin Wright divorced Sean Penn in 2010. She hasn’t used Penn since then.
oops! Great catch, thanks!
Love this new series. I hope you keep doing it.
So glad! I plan to! x
I love that you are doing this! I get the majority of my book recs for you, and look forward to a curated list of shows. Thanks, Grace!
So glad to hear it!!!
The vibes for Black Rabbit were giving Uncut Gems, which I hated (gave me massive anxiety), so I’m glad I chose to skip. Obsessed with Platonic and the Morning Show. I’m surprised you didn’t watch the Summer I Turned Pretty!! I don’t think this show is your vibe, but I love Gen V on Amazon Prime. There’s a bunch of stuff coming out that I can’t wait to watch – Wayward on Netflix, new season of English Teacher on FX/Hulu, the new season of Love is Blind (10/1) on Netflix….
Haha just not into TSITP! But happy so many others love!
