Le Labo

I have a habit of adding things to the notebook in my phone with no context whatsoever. If you were to look into my iPhone notebook, it would read something like this “jalapeno tequila – jj eyelashes – the power of one” A stream of consciousness; a whole lot of jibberish. It’s full of books I want to read, TV shows I need to start, you get the point. The problem is that I have gotten older, I have gotten a lot more forgetful, so I put everything in my notebook… often forgetting to add context or at least the person to help me remember later. But anyway… I was cleaning out my notepad a while back and saw “Le Labo Santal 26” written in my phone. I was a little confused so I googled it, to find that it was a candle, sold at Le Labo’s Nolita boutique. So I ventured in to the store, and oh my goodness, wow.

The candle is unlike anything I’d smelled before. Santal 26 is a is one of those amazing unisex fragrances that everyone – guys and girls- will love. The best I can describe it is a little bit powdery; a little bit leathery. So good.  And because I have an orange blossom addiction, I also picked up the smallest bottle of their Fleur d’Oranger fragrance, which has become my signature scent – I wear it every day and am almost halfway through the .5 oz. bottle. I’ll be back to pick up the larger one in a month or so. The fragrance is absolute heaven if you love orange blossom… and it took the perfumer three years to develop!

After a bit of asking around to my friends, I realized it was Alicia who told me about Le Labo. I have her to thank for two of my most favorite smells in the world. Thank goodness for her… and my little iPhone notebook! Also, I found out they have a store at The Ace Hotel, which is literally around the corner from my office… I can’t wait to pop in!

If you’re a scent junkie (I totally am) you should also check out L’atelier Cologne, also on Elizabeth street. I have their Grand Neroli perfume and it’s rather amazing—I sprayed some on a test strip when I walked by once and then couldn’t stop smelling it for a week so I had to go back for some! I layer it with Serge Lutens’ Gris Clair every day. For candles, I also really love 1820 House (sandalwood and cardamom), Dead Horse Bay Candles (I just got a coconut lime from them that’s perfect for summer) and Kobo, who makes a great leather mahogany candle!

I LOVE Le Labo Santal 26!!! It’s also the signature scent of the Gramercy Park Hotel… which means it must be fabulous, right? I recently read that the St. Cecilia Hotel in Austin uses it as well. Great minds think alike. Enjoy your new scents 🙂

This might sound crazy, but I totally forget about my iPhone notebook. having stream of consciousness notes of jibberish is better than having no notes at all. I’m going to “borrow” this habit of yours (and also check out this candle.)
