Entering the Digital Age…

the stripe kindle review 1

We’ve talked at length about my addiction to books. I’m always reading… usually at least three books at a time. (Is that weird? I’ve usually got something intelligent, something business-y, and something that is a guilty pleasure, all going at once. I’ve always been very old fashioned about my books. Hardcover is/was my preference, otherwise paperback. I’d never read a book in digital form for two reasons… a) I worried that it would feel weird reading an electronic book (I always pictured it lighting up kind of like a computer or iPad screen – ouch on the eyes!) and b) I love the smell of books, the feel of a book in my hand, etc… I’m old fashioned.

Recently, Kindle reached out to have me try their new Paperwhite and I gotta say, things changed. I’ll always love the way holding a book feels… but for travel and being on the go, it’s amazing. My Paperwhite fits inside my smallest purses (it’s only petite in stature at only 6″), making it perfect for trips and long subway/train rides.

I’m still a fan of traditional books, but this little gadget is pretty genius. I’m officially entering the digital age when it comes to my books!

Like I mentioned before, it fits easily into my purse… and literally holds thousands of books.

Given the time of year, I should mention that the Paperwhite is priced right for gifting at only $99.

It reads like a book (no glare, no bright screen or strained eyes) and has additional cool features too. For example… you can look up words you don’t know without leaving the page, you can adjust the text size to be bigger, you can share your library with friends! Like I said, I’ll always love traditional books… but this little guy is pretty fab.

When I used to read more, I’d use the Kindle App on my phone whenever I was on the go!

But would be definitely handy for travel. On the plane, train etc haha

Thank you. I could not think of a gift for my mom for Christmas, but this is perfect! I used the link to purchase.

I swore off any type of electronic to read books until this past year, when we moved & going to the public library became a much bigger ordeal. It’s hard to beat the 1 minute it takes to download a new book!

I definitely agree with you that having a physical book is still my favorite, but a digital one is just so easy to travel with and bring along in your bag.

I had a Kindle a few years ago but I never got into it for two reasons – one is that like you, I’m obsessed with real books, and two – the Kindle had a sort of gray background that was very unlike a real book, and made it a little hard to read. I think they corrected that issue with the Paperwhite so it’s probably a lot better than my old (first generation?) version. I used to use the Kindle app a good amount too, even though it required reading on an absolutely tiny screen, it didn’t really bother me. Definitely good for being on the go!

I was an English major and am now an editor, so I feel like I’m not allowed to admit it… but I prefer reading on my Kindle (I have the same one and same cover even!) even more than books. Especially when I travel, it’s so great – I used to bring 7 books on a vacation. That’s some suitcase space! And I love that I always have a book with me at all times, between the Kindle itself being so portable and having the app on my phone. I read way more, thanks to the Kindle, actually.

I love my kindle paperwhite. Surprisingly, I have been using electronic readers since 1999! I had to download books from my land phone line! I still love “real” books, but this has made my life so easy. I love being able to read in bed while my husband sleeps next to me-no light troubles.

I have the original Kindle, I have for a few years, and I LOVE it. I travel a lot and also like to have a couple of books going at once, so having my Kindle is a life saver. I hope you enjoy it! Also I love that I can access Amazon on it to buy a new book or download a sample from an airport, hotel, or my apartment. No more finishing a book and having to go to the library or book store to get a new one!

Making the switch to digital took me awhile. Like you, I love the feel and smell of a good, old fashioned paperback. But when I moved in with my (now) husband, and our collections merged…let’s just say it was more than we ever wanted to move again at one time.

I can relate so much to this post. I enjoy reading a lot of books as well and usually have 2 or 3 books that I’m reading at a time. I like the feel and smell of books. lol

This little gadget seems cool even though I’m a traditionalist when it comes to book reading. On the plus side I won’t have to carry heavy books around with me.

Grace, now that you have a Kindle you need to check out your local library’s e-book collection! You can borrow e-books from your library right to your Kindle, just like like a good old-fashioned library book. It’s great because it’s free, so you aren’t spending hundreds on books, digital or otherwise 🙂

I am right there with you about loving old fashioned hard cover books, but kindles and iPads are just so much easier to travel with!

I am always looking for new books suggestions, especially right now that it is the holidays and I am on vacation. Would be so fun if you shared some of your favorite reads – I know I would love to hear what you suggest!
