DIY: Shourouk inspired Rope & Crystal Necklace

Shourouk has been absolutely killing it lately.  They might just be my favorite jewelry designer right now.  A few favorites include this and this, but their Ivana Necklace is truly something special.  The pairing of ornate crystals and luxe jewel-tone rope makes it so unique and different.  It’s the sort of thing you can wear with jeans and a tee, or a ball gown.  I set out to make my own interpretation of it and have been wearing it pretty constantly.  I love it equally paired with my casual Tippi sweater (below) or with a little black dress (at Lucky’s event last week.)  Although it’s rather fancy looking, it’s easy to make… all you need is some rope, crystals, and velvet ribbon.  I opted to make mine in oxblood, but the cord comes in a wide array of colors.

{Keep in mind, we’re using the word inspired here…  I am not a jeweler, so the velvet ribbons felt like a great way to create a bib effect without soldering gemstones together.}

Materials // Where to Buy:  Assorted gemstones in their settings + rhinestone trim // 2″ Velvet Ribbon // 5/16″ Satin Rope

6 Barrel Cord Ends // 1 Large Lobster Clasp // 6 Small Jump Rings // 1 Large Jump Ring. // Strong Glue

{Start by cutting your rope into three pieces.  I made mine 16″, 16.5″, and 17″ long.    (Use masking tape to ensure that the ends don’t fray.)  Next, glue a barrel cord end onto each end.  Allow to dry… positioning the shortest piece at the top and the longest piece at the bottom.}

{Cut three pieces of velvet.  One should be 6.5″.  This will be your center piece.  The other two side pieces should be 5″ long.  Fold each piece in half and trim the ends to a triangular point.  Wrap the pieces around your rope and glue the sides together.}

{This is where you get creative…  arrange your gemstones + rhinestone trim in a pattern.  Get creative and have fun!}

{Finish the necklace by adding a small jump ring to each cord end, and then a large jump ring to one side and a clasp to the other side.}

{And here it is in action!}
