DIY: Metallic Rope Necklace

Today’s DIY was a lot of fun to make, and also happens to be surprisingly easy.  I’ve had this brightly colored electric tape hanging around for quite some time and wasn’t all that sure what to do with it until I had the idea to make this necklace.  The closure also came from the hardware store, and before you knew it, my necklace was made.  Although it looks elaborate, this bad boy should only set you back 15-20 minutes… materials won’t cost you more than $15 total.  I’ll pair this with a chunky wool sweater, or wear it under the collar of a chambray shirt.  (I’ll probably come back and add in a more stylized shot later… Hurricane Sandy has me a bit out of sorts and behind on photography.)

Materials:  Cotton Rope (about 38″) // Metallic Rope (about 60″) I bought rose gold from MJ Trim, but this is really pretty.

Colored Electric Tape // Large Hook Closure

Start out by looping your cord through your hook closure.  Put about 60% through one side and 40% though the other.  Seal off the opposite side with electrical tape, forming a loop.

From here, work around the necklace in a circle, taping 1.5 inches of tape every 3 inches or so.  Finish by taping close to your clasp, and then tape your metallic rope to the underside.

Following the above illustrations, you will want to make a loop formation with the metallic rope… weaving it back through , as demonstrated above.

Continue along, looping and weaving as demonstrated above… I put two loops between each segment of tape.  When you get to the end, tape the end to the underside your taped section and you are done… voila!rope5
