This the season… for parched lips, cracked heels, and waaay heavier handbags. Heavier handbags, you ask? Yes. All of a sudden I don’t feel safe leaving the house without hand cream, face cream, lip balm, and this ultra-rich stick in case of emergencies. I basically now carry a cosmetics case just for my moisturizers. Yes, I realize I am insane. What can I say… I was a girl scout. I’m always prepared.
We have talked about bag essentials earlier this month… I’m never without these six things. That being said, lip balm has a special place in my heart and today I wanted to tell you about my three favorites. My lips are so chapped right now and I have become a compulsive lip balm applier. I layer it under my lipstick or gloss. I’m pretty much never without it as chapped lips are just the absolute worst.
Of all the lip balms in all the land, By Terry Baume de Rose is the creme de la creme, my absolute favorite. It’s the ultimate lip balm, and really, it should be… because it costs $60. I promise you though, it is quite possibly the best $60 you will ever spend. The little glass pot will last you at least a year (even if you apply it as compulsively as I do) and it is such a little luxury. I like to give it to girlfriends as birthday gifts because it’s something really special that people won’t necessarily buy for themselves. I have three of them (also insane, but I already acknowledged above that I’m crazy). There is one at my vanity (to apply before bed), one in my carry-on (the air on the plane is the worst), and one in my purse (for constant touch-ups). It is one of my most treasured possessions. The formula is super rich and glossy for a balm (but not at all sticky). It’s so shiny that you can even wear it on its own instead of gloss. It even smells expensive… like crushed rose petals.
All of my girlfriends have been buzzing about Kari Gran’s lip whip. They are obsessed in the same way that I am obsessed with the By Terry. My friend Victoria dedicated an entire post to it. At her recommendation, I scooped up Radiant ($21) during a visit to Credo Beauty. I liked it, but the By Terry had ruined me. It didn’t feel rich or creamy enough! That being said, once I got past the fact that it wasn’t quite as creamy (and glossy) as my beloved, it really grew on me. The formula is much lighter than the By Terry but it feels a lot like frosting. And putting frosting on your lips is fun, especially when it’s ultra hydrating, tingles like peppermint, and leaves your lips just slightly more pink than they normally would be. It isn’t By Terry, but it is almost entirely organic, and it leaves your lips feeling incredibly soft. The finish is slightly matte in comparison to the other lip balms I have here.
Lastly, a new one that I just tried! You know by now that I love, love Supergoop. They make the best sunscreens. Their new Perk Up! tint ($22) imparts lips + cheeks with the prettiest pink tint AND it has SPF 40. So you get protection against my other (actual) worst nightmares: skin cancer and wrinkles. In addition to the pretty pink tint and the added SPF, it gives lips a bit of shine and hydrates dry cheeks. (This is really great both before or after a run… I love my winter runs but they leave my skin in such a sorry state).
So here I am, rambling on and on about expensive fancypants lip balms. I know. They really are amazing though. Buy one for yourself or for your maybe one for your galentine. For something more reasonably priced (but just as effective) there is also this four-pack of Burt’s Bees for when you want to fix your chapped lips and don’t care about being fancy. And at 4 for $10, you could have 24 of them for the price of the By Terry. But we won’t think about that.

Everybody raves about that By Terry lip balm and it does sound amazing but it’s so much money I honestly don’t know when I’ll be able to afford it hahaha
I know. It is very expensive. If I were you I’d test it out first (I believe Neiman’s carries the brand) to see if it is worth it. I wouldn’t sweat it though… it’s a wonderful product but at the end of the day, if you are on a budget, go with the burts bees. By Terry is an incredible luxury but your lips aren’t going to fall off because you didn’t use $60 lip balm 😉 xo
When I was on acutane i got la mer lip balm and it is worth the $$!!! Last month i had an odd amount of credit left on Net a Porter so i was going through lip stuff and was like ‘oh I have heard of by terry people love this stuff’ so I got one of the tinted ones…..its straight up chrome pink hahha!
I haven’t tried that one but I heard REALLY good things.
How do you like the tinted one? I have been meaning to try it!! Is the color payoff good or is it just colorful in the jar? x
thank you for this, because i am actually hunting for a good do it all lip thingy. a little color, and a lot of moisture. you’re a mind reader!

Oh good!! Hope you give one of these a try. It sounds like Kari Gran or Supergoop could be perfect if you are looking for a little color.
Those all look so luxurious and wonderful to wear! I feel like I have to try out the By Terry now after that review!
You must! It is wonderful!! x
Thank you for the By Terry recommendation! Sounds like it’s exactly what I was looking for: A cruelty-free dupe for my Nuxe Reve de Miel which is by far the best lip balm I’ve ever tried.
Love,

Oooh I have never tried Nuxe Reve de Miel! I hope you try By Terry – it is an incredible product! x
I’ll have to try By Terry.
I hope you do – I love so many of her products! xx
Love this post – I have different lip balms stashed in every purse, scattered in bowls around my apartment, and frequently find them in my pants pockets. Burt’s Bees mango balm is my go-to daily choice, but Bite’s agave mask has truly saved my lips this winter. I wear it every night – it’s so thick and emollient there’s still a residue when I wake up. During summer I don’t need something so heavy, so my night lip balm is the Lucas Paw Paw ointment.
I love the Paw Paw!! And Bite’s mask. It’s so thick and rich!! 🙂
Hi Grace, this is a fun post! I’m obsessed with lip balm. I love Burt’s Bees. I used to use the Roses’s minted lip balm, but quit it because of all the petroleum. It was my sister’s birthday on the 22nd. She is a huge SpaceNK and by Terry fan, so I sent the Baum de rose lip balm to her for her birthday. She loves it! I had sent her the Dior a couple birthdays ago and she liked that too. Of course, I’d never spend that much on myself for lip balm……..now I might be tempted. Thanks for the recommendations!
Aw you are such a nice sister – way to spoil her!!!! Glad to hear she loves it. You should treat yourself to one too!! x
I’ve only used Nivea and Burts Bees lip balms, but mannnn I really want to try the By Terry one! The amount of positive reviews its received, ahh!

I know, everyone who tries it raves about it! And then it sucks you in because once you try it you can’t go back! I am a big fan of the Burt’s Bees though – it really works!!!
Terry Baume de Rose is one of my very favourite simple lip products because even though it’s just a conditioner, it has a beautiful sheen. I really want to try the other products you mentioned!
