An Accidental (Really Good) Color Combination

A few things I almost always do when I am planning outfits are a) look at Pinterest and b) play around with colors. You never really know what is going to pop; there might be a fun surprise. My friend Blair is so good at color play; she comes up with the most unique color pairings that I wouldn’t necessarily think of on my own.

The above color combo came about accidentally. I was getting dressed and had been inspired by this outfit that I saw on Pinterest. This G Label sweater is one of my absolute favorites (I love chartreuse, and the fit is just right for me). I wanted to style it similarly to the woman in the photo without completely copying her. Originally, I thought I’d wear it with my toffee-colored High Sport pants, but that didn’t feel quite right (it felt a little boring, and the brown brought out a murkier side of the chartreuse). I decided to try a jewel tone (thinking I’d have to swap out the red flats), but when I put on my cobalt High Sports, I was shocked. The three colors somehow played very well together: an updated take on the classic primaries.

For me, getting dressed is a tremendous amount of trial and error. I’m drawn to everything, and I am not innately stylish. My best outfits come when I experiment a little bit and take the time to be a little more thoughtful, try a few different things, and make swaps when necessary. It doesn’t always happen (TBH, sometimes I am busy and just can’t be bothered), but it’s worth it when it does.

Outfit details: G Label Sweater, High Sport Pants, Alaïa Flats, Sherman-Field Necklace, Etsy Tote

In the spirit of “thoughtful swaps,” I spent some time tracking down a few cute options at various price points to recreate this look. The bag is already a great price. (I love a good Etsy find!)

Clockwise from top left: ASOS Sweater (don’t be afraid of men’s–just size down!), Steve Madden Ballet Flats, Madewell Shell Necklace, Draper James Ponte Pants, Zara Sweater, BaubleBar Earrings (great price + remind me of Heaven Mayhem), Loeffler Randall Sneaker Flats, Madewell Ballet Flats (25% off right now), Apiece Apart kick flares (still $$ but less than High Sport and I really love this brand), Donni Tee (just bought this)

Grace, this is so gorgeous! I love that you found a winning combo and that you are sharing it with us. It’s also super comforting to know you don’t consider yourself innately stylish. From the outside it looks effortless!

That is so kind of you to say! It is definitely not. A lot of trial and error and getting it wrong.

Hi! Love this combo. Two quick things: 1) A pieceapart kick flare link is broken. 2) Curious if you have found a simple way to move key items from handbag to handbag? I want to accessorize more with different purses/bags and every time, I make a switch, I’m running out of the house wondering, did I get everything? Thanks!
