DIY gifts can make really great gifts as they are so thoughtful. Any time someone actually takes the time to make me something, I am so touched. It’s so personal and kind! Making gifts also costs a lot less money and there is no waiting around for them to come in the mail. Today I am rounding up my ten favorites… from both my blog archives and around the web. The perfect gifts for family and friends if you ask me…
DIY Christmas Gift Ideas List
Here are a few of my favorite gift ideas. Projects I’ve made over the years and projects from a few sites I really trust and love. Did you make any homemade holiday gifts this year? If so I’d love to hear what you made in the comments!
DIY Pressed Flower Stained Glass Wall Hanging
How pretty is this tutorial from Jojotastic?! I’m obviously biased as I love green and anything botanical, but I am dying to try making these. The result is just so pretty and looks (surprisingly easy) to make, too!
DIY Dried Citrus Garlands
Honestly, Honestly WTF is just the best for DIY tutorials. I could spend forever perusing their project archives. Erica has become a friend of mine and is just so incredibly talented and creative! This citrus garland idea blew my mind a little as I’ve never seen anything like it!
DIY Tassel Earrings
My DIY Tassel Earrings post remains one of my post popular tutorials and for good reason. This one is really, really easy… it makes a great gift, and yields professional results without a lot of work. One pair should only take you 15 minutes or so. Just make sure you use a really sharp needle… that’s the key to this one!
Delicate Crystal Necklace
This is one of my older posts (from 2013!) but the results are so pretty and I still wear this necklace! If I were to make it again I would use gold chain but that’s just my personal preference. It will take about 20-30 minutes to make and would be the perfect handmade gift for your sister or best friend.
DIY Lip Balm
There are a lot of really great lip balm tutorials from around the web but I love this one because a) it’s tinted, and b) the tint comes from grinding up raspberries. So clever and smart. I am dying to try this one. It looks easy (the recipe says it takes only 6 minutes to make) and the results are soooo beautiful.
Turmeric Face Mask
My DIY Turmeric Face Mask is one of my most popular beauty posts and so easy to make. (It only takes a few minutes to mix up all the ingredients, most of which you probably already have.) Just be sure to keep it cold. I would make 5-6x the amount of the recipe, put it into a pretty mason jar, and bring to your recipient’s house so that he/she can immediately store it in the fridge. Since this mask can stain white washcloths, a nice touch would be to wrap up one of these black washcloths too and make a little set. You could include a paintbrush too if you want to be extra thoughtful!
Apple Cider Hair Rinse
My Apple Cider Hair Rinse is another popular beauty one that you can whip up in seconds. It is so good for your hair and insanely easy to make. I would recommend making a big batch, pouring into these squeeze bottles, and tying with a pretty bow. Your recipient will love it, and beg you for the recipe once he/she sees how shiny their hair is from using it!
DIY Glitter Candles
These glitter candles are fun (and oddly relaxing) to make, and who doesn’t love a festive candle!? You can get creative and use all different types of glitter… I used a mix of fine + chunky gold. This is a quick one. I recommend setting aside an hour or so… you could easily make 6-10 candles in that timeframe!
DIY Planter Gifts
This is another really fun and easy one! Planters are definitely one of my favorite DIY gifts. (I may be partial, candles + plants are my favorite gifts to give/receive). Upcycle your old cans with a little bit of marble contact paper with this DIY Planter Gift Tutorial. It only takes 5-10 minutes to make!
DIY Etched Glass Votives
This easy etching tutorial is another older post with seriously beautiful results. It takes a little more time than the other projects in this post (and be sure you’re really careful and apply the tape tightly without any air bubbles) but the results are gorgeous. Make a set of three or four!
DIY Holiday Jam
I will be honest, I still can’t believe I pulled this one off! My holiday jam recipe for “apple pie in a jar” is really easy but does take a bit more time. But making jam is the perfect way to spend an afternoon (and your apartment will smell HEAVENLY afterward!) This tastes so good… like apple crisp or the inside of an apple pie.
DIY Sugar Scrub
Homemade sugar scrub is another really easy (yet incredibly thoughtful!) handmade Christmas gift! There are sooooo many recipes out there but I am partial to this one as I find grapefruit and mint to both be so invigorating.
DIY Cross Stitch Embroidery Tea Towel
Ending with another beautiful tutorial from Honestly WTF. I could not love this project more and am planning to try it this winter… cross stitch always seemed so complicated but Erica breaks it down in a way that makes it sound really easy. Embroidering a tea towel for a loved one is the perfect personalized gift. So thoughtful!
I think my favourite DIY has got to be the sugar scrub! I love that it’s practical too. 🙂

The grapefruit is so nice! Thanks Charmaine!!!
Absolutely love this roundup Grace, and completely agree… it’s not about how much money someone spends, a thoughtful gift or beautiful card with a caring message is so much more meaningful, and it’s that type of gift we often remember for years to come.
