Book Lover // A Day in the Life (+ Amazon Giveaway!)

How Life Unfolds is running a "15 pages a day" reading challenge!

UPDATE – GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED! I HAVE EMAILED THE WINNER 🙂

Unless this is your first time visiting the blog, you know how much I love to read. It’s my absolute most favorite pastime.

I’ve always been a paper books kind of girl… E-readers just don’t do it for me. I know some people find them to be more convenient but I’m a stickler, even for a longer trip like Asia, where I packed 5 books in my suitcase. Honestly, I just love paper books. I like to hold a book as I read. And in a way it’s a bit of a ritual and sensory experience. I really like the actual feeling of the paper between my fingers as I turn the pages. And I love the way new books (and bookstores!) smell.

How Life Unfolds is running a “15 pages a day”
reading challenge!

Read more about that here! They asked me to film a little “day in the life” style video which shows my day to day (and probably answers the question of how I manage to read so much!!!). I hope you enjoy! AND, to maybe further incentivize you to get those pages in, we are giving one lucky reader a $500 gift card to Amazon (so that you can stock up on alllll the books!)

Scroll to the end of the post to enter via the widget, and comment below with your favorite time of day to read..

Reading 15 pages a day (on paper) has so many benefits. 1. I’m so on board for this challenge! I’ve always been a bookworm growing up, and like you, I can’t get used to e-readers now. It’s paper all the way! 🙂

I love reading in the evening times & at bed time unless it’s a snow or rain day then I read during the afternoon etc…

  2. MC says 8.14.18

I love waking up early on a Sunday and reading with a cup of coffee and my dog snoozing next to me on the couch-so peaceful (even if it usually only lasts a chapter)

  3. Anne says 8.14.18

This is such a great campaign! A whole day of reading on the beach is pretty much my ideal day… but in real life, my favorite time to read is on my lunch break. Somehow it makes a standard lunch feel like a guilty pleasure (in a good way) when I get to eat it with a book in my hand.

  4. Elle says 8.14.18

Such a fun challenge, Grace! Definitely trying to get back into reading. xo elle

  5. Marty says 8.14.18

Love this! I always look to you for book recommendations and have read numerous of your picks and you haven’t steered me wrong yet. I try to read on the weekends since not a lot of time with work (though I do sneak in several pages during the week) and aim for at least a book a week, when possible. I’ve checked out more YA books since your podcast launched and also love the thrillers and romantic comedies.

  6. Suzanne says 8.14.18

Early in the morning before my family wakes up!

  7. Katie says 8.14.18

I’m always carrying a book around with me – I agree I love physical books! Even though its more to carry I always have one in my bag and usually try to read every morning on the bus to work and any other time I can squeeze in throughout the day!

  8. Melissa s says 8.14.18

I love to read at night!

  9. Megan says 8.14.18

Three friends and I set a goal of reading 25 books this year, and so far all of us are on track to surpass that number! It’s been so motivating to see each other’s progress. I try to take a few nights each week to keep the tv off, or to let my husband watch a show I’m not interested in. I have a 2 year old, and I’m not in charge of bath duty, so I try to sneak a few pages in at that time as well. I look forward to your reading list posts each month, and add almost every book to my own list!

  10. Megan says 8.14.18

While I make time to read every day, my favorite time is on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Nothing feels more indulgent!

  11. Swetha says 8.14.18

I try to read before bed (even if it means staying up too late….) but lately I’ve loved weekend mornings spent with reading and coffee! My favorite ‘destination reading’ has to be reading on vacation or after a hike in nature.

  12. Meghan says 8.14.18

I love to read in the evenings before bed, as well as on the train to/from work. I’m so excited for this challenge! What a great way to encourage making reading a part of your daily routine.

  13. Sandy S. says 8.14.18

Once I pick up a good book I devour it! I will sneak peeks at all times of the day obsessed until I finish!

  14. Lauren says 8.14.18

I mostly read at night before bed, but my very favorite time is a lazy, rainy Sunday.

  15. Jessica says 8.14.18

My favorite time to read is in the evening after supper.

  17. Kimberly Sneathen says 8.14.18

My favorite TIMES a day to read are during my lunch hour (to escape work for a bit) and when I get in bed at night (to wind down from the day)! Like you, reading is one of my favorite past times and I look so forward to it each day!!

  18. Amy says 8.14.18

I looove to read before bed, but I know I lose so much sleep that way! Just 15 minutes turns into an hour 🙂 Staying in bed to read on weekend mornings is also pure bliss. Love this challenge!

  19. Kayla says 8.14.18

I love reading for a half an hour before bed. I turn my phone over and put it on do not disturb and dive into a book. It helps me unwind and relax before bed. It’s my little night-time self-care ritual!

  20. JoAnn says 8.14.18

Hi, Grace! One of my fave rituals since I’ve been younger is to wake up extra early on Saturday mornings, sneak some cookies, and read in bed until I fall asleep again. 🙂

  21. Taylor Wymer says 8.14.18

I love reading right before bed – it gets me away from a screen to start winding down, and also reminds me of when I was a kid sneaking more book time under the covers after the lights went out! 🙂

  22. Sarah Farnsworth says 8.14.18

I love reading on my covered porch during a thunderstorm. Something about the sound of the rain adds so much drama to whatever I’m reading!

  23. Reema Boldes says 8.14.18

I love paper books, but I started borrowing ebooks from my library to read on the Overdrive app a few years ago, and now I read several books a month. I try to read a bit every night and most mornings.

  24. Tracy says 8.14.18

Whenever I can! With two boys under three I mostly read to them but it is better than nothing . Great giveaway!!

  25. Maureen says 8.14.18

  26. Donna says 8.14.18

I love to read on the train during my commute. I used to love reading at night before bed but I usually don’t get very far 🙂

I love to read paper books too! Nothing beats the smell of a bookstore or library book.

  28. Amanda M Adams says 8.14.18

    Love to win!

  29. Ashley says 8.14.18

  30. Tess Krovetz says 8.14.18

i’m on maternity leave so i’m reading when the baby sleeps during the day, and occasionally reading to him from whatever book i am reading (he’s learning about Catherine the Great at the moment).

  31. Adrianna Taeschler says 8.14.18

I’m a night time reader! It immediately relaxes me and helps me fall asleep. I try to get in bed 20-30 minutes early so I can read, relax and get ready for a restful sleep! It’s my favorite way to unwind, especially if there’s a candle involved 🙂

  32. Amy Marshall says 8.14.18

I read at lunch and before bed.

  33. Emma D. says 8.14.18

  34. Katie says 8.14.18

I love reading at night, before bed.

  35. Allie Rapp says 8.14.18

I love reading in bed, right before I fall asleep. It helps relax my mind and transport it away from the troubles of the day! I typically find myself reading 3-4 times a week, so can’t wait to try the 15 pages a day out! ( I have the feeling somedays I will go way way over 15) xx- Allie

  37. Alex says 8.14.18

I <3 this challenge, Grace, and love coming to your little corner of the internet for book recommendations. Like you, I'm a paper books over e-reader gal & skipping nights out on Friday to stay in to read is usually my MO.

  38. Laurie Harrell says 8.14.18

I completely get how much you love reading on paper! I love the smell the feel of paper books! There’s something about reading from an actual book that you don’t get from an E-Reader! I have hundreds of books maybe thousands, I never counted! I just know that I have books everywhere. My Livingroom, Bedroom, Bathroom, my family room, and even in my car! I can’t walk past a bookstore or a tag sale without stopping to look at the books! I almost always buy 5 to 10 or more, each time I find some that I like!

    Early morning

  44. SARA says 8.14.18

    EARLY AFTERNOON

  45. B D says 8.14.18

I adore books — whether they are brand new books with that new book smell or antiquarian books with the musty smell. My favorite time to read is during a mid-afternoon downtime (siesta style). Alas, work doesn’t appreciate that too much, so I tend to read in the evenings.

  46. Grace says 8.14.18

i love to read before bed, especially on weekends! it really helps me wind down.

  47. Kim Salmi says 8.14.18

I love to read any chance any time i can .I’ve loved books since I was a toddler even before I could read them myself .Back when I was a kid you didn’t start learning to read till kindergarten and even then it wasn’t until first grade you really got into it seriously….so as you can tell I’ve been reading a long time .And I plan to for a long time to come.So count me in for the challenge☺

  48. Rachel Byrne says 8.14.18

My favorite time of day to read would be all day, every day, if I didn’t have work and family to take care of! I love to read in the morning to kind of get my brain ready for the day, and I love to read before bed to soothe and relax my mind. Thank you for this opportunity!

  49. Latonia Boudreau says 8.14.18

I have to read before bed! I can’t go to sleep without reading a bit. Love this challenge!

  59. Kelly says 8.14.18

At the gym – makes the treadmill/elliptical/bike go by quickly! On the subway to/from work…and right before bed. Also – you can listen to audio books any time of the day – I pop one on whenever I’m walking or commuting and don’t have a physical book with me.

  60. Lindsey says 8.14.18

I too love reading a physical book over an e-book. It’s the accessory that never goes out of style. My favorite time to read is when I first get up especially on the weekends. The beach is my favorite spot to dive into a juicy book but really anytime I can get a good chunk of time in to read I’m happy!

  61. Natalie says 8.14.18

  70. SaLLy says 8.14.18

Ideal time for me to read is mid-afternoon when the natural light is best. Time I wind up reading most often is at night with really bad artificial lighting!

Every night before bed…and middle of night when insomnia hits. Love love love reading! Your montgly reading posts are my fav!

  73. Kelly says 8.14.18

I always read before bed and when I take a bath! The best way to unwind. If I’m on vacation, I love to read at the beach! A little trickier now that I have a kiddo but I can usually squeeze some time in when the in-laws or my parents watch him for a bit

  74. Taylor says 8.14.18

I recently bought a Kindle just to be able to save space in my apartment, but when I can get a better deal on a physical copy of a book I can’t pass it up. I love making time to read before going to bed, allowing myself at least an hour to read in bed before lights out. Such a nice way to relax, especially with a face mask and cup of tea. I have found that I have a much more restful nights sleep when I read before bed rather than watching Netflix. Your blog (& podcast!) has inspired me to try and read even more, which was one of my big goals for 2018.

    xo, Taylor

  78. John Lewis says 8.14.18

I love to read at night on my lifecycle.

  79. Emily says 8.14.18

I love to read on my lunch break…it’s a nice break from screen time (As a marketer, I stare at a computer all day…mostly spreadsheets eek!) and nice to hold a “real” book. I am part of a wonderful book club, the gal who’s the host each month chooses the book and it’s a great way to read a wide variety of books that I wouldn’t have otherwise chosen.

  80. Debbie Hardy says 8.14.18

I love to read at sunset.

  81. Kathryn Mackey says 8.14.18

I liketo read before I go to bed at night around 8pm.

  82. Megan Myers-Bell says 8.14.18

My favorite time to read is right before bed. After I’ve done my skincare routine, which is super relaxing to me, there’s nothing better than crawling in to bed and reading for 30-60 minutes. I’m currently reading “The Child” by Fiona Barton and I’m really in to it!

  83. Michelle says 8.14.18

My favorite time of day to read is on the morning commute on the subway!

Afternoon on my days off and late at night!

  92. Caroline says 8.14.18

Since my breakup at the end of May, I’ve read FIVE books! I haven’t read this much in forever and I’ve been loving it. I’ve also been off of Instagram for 6 weeks. My favorite time to read has been at night, especially instead of watching TV.

  93. Jen K says 8.14.18

Love reading. I’ve been a bookworm all my life. In fact, my entire family are huge readers, which is something I love about us. If I don’t have errands to run, I always read on my lunch break and then I do try to always leave time to read before bed. Sometimes I only get through a page or 2 before I fall asleep, but it’s such a great way to wind down. I’ll admit that I do read on my iPad sometimes. It’s just such an easy way to carry lots of books with you. But I do still prefer an actual book and have a huge stack waiting to be read on my bedside table (and filling the drawers of that table as well).

  94. Caitlin Barrett says 8.14.18

I love reading in the evening before bed. Keeps me off of my phone 🙂

  95. Steven Epstein says 8.14.18

Always before I go to bed, though it’s usually not a very good idea because it means I hardly ever go to sleep!

  96. Tiara says 8.14.18

I love to read in the middle of the day when my daughter naps. A rare treat here in the desert is to read while raindrops fall on the roof ♡

  97. Tara says 8.14.18

What a fun challenge. I am trying to make more time for reading. Trying to read a bit more at night, instead of tv. I find I sleep better! I also try and keep a light read in the car in case my kids fall asleep or I am waiting for pickup or drop off 🙂

  98. Theresa Lawson says 8.14.18

I wish I read more, I used to be such an avid reader as a teen! Now it’s usually 10 minutes before bed.

  99. Kate Hughes says 8.14.18

In the evening, before bed. But I also agree that it’s a weekend indulgence!

My fave time of day to read a book is anytime on a rainy day or in the evening by twinkle lights .
The written word to me is a balm to the soul

I’ve always been a bookworm and am so excited to enter this contest! My favorite time to read is before bed.

  105. Allison says 8.14.18

I love reading in the in-between moments. In line, in my (parked) car, at the salon, etc. A page or two while waiting for a friend to meet me for coffee. I’ll often arrive early just to create some space for a few minutes of reading!

  111. Tabetha Tlili says 8.14.18

I love to read in the evening after everything is done to relax

  112. Kelly says 8.14.18

I love listening to audiobooks – in the car to and from work or running errands, or on my speaker while doing chores. I also try to read for a few minutes while eating lunch at work, or before bed. On vacation is definitely when I can read most quickly – especially on long flights or car rides!

  113. Karen says 8.14.18

A challenge that speaks to me!!! I still love reading paper books. My house is filled with them in that I am running out of room to store them.
My favorite time of day to read is after i tackle my check list for the day. So there’s really not a specific time. In general it falls under the evening on weekdays and sometime in the afternoon on weekends. When I’m reading a really great book … especially now… I zip through the list just so I can pick up the book.

  114. Lisa says 8.14.18

    What an amazing contest!
I have a Kindle but I always end up going back to paper books.
I read any time I can. When I was reading Gone Girl years ago I was so obsessed I was sneak reading quick pages at work!

  115. Leigh Casler says 8.14.18

I love reading early in the mornings on the weekends; I like to start at 6 or 6:30, make myself some coffee, and really hunker down in my bed with my book and coffee. I especially love reading like this in the autumn season with the windows open for crisp air to creep in while I’m surrounded by my warm bed, pillows, and a great blanket.

  116. Tammy K says 8.14.18

    evening

  117. Linda says 8.14.18

Can’t beat reading in bed for at least 30min. before lights out. It’s been a ritual for as long as I can remember!

  118. A Girl, A Style says 8.14.18

Love this little video so much! Like you I am a lifelong book obsessive (I would always get in trouble for reading under the covers with a torch way past my bedtime, or spend entire weekends happily reading under a tree in the garden when normal kids were off playing video games or going to the mall). But now that I’m commuting less (train time = reading time), I keep forgetting to actively carve out time to read each day and as a result have not been reading nearly as much as I would like. So taking you up on this challenge and going to commit to 15 pages every evening (starting with some of your recent Pod recommendations)! Thank you for the reminder.

    Your fellow introvert nerd,
    Briony xox

  119. Brandy costanzo says 8.14.18

Would love to win. Thank you for this awesome chance

  120. Jolene S says 8.14.18

Our book club just started our 22nd year together. We were parents at the same elementary school and we have kept these friendships going! This year we lost a longtime member who was a school librarian and book lover, and she had read 70 books between January and April. I’m always inspired by her love for and knowledge of books and her joy of sharing books with young readers

  121. Kate says 8.14.18

What a great challenge – 15 pages feels so doable, and often leads to finishing another few pages… or just another chapter… 🙂

I love to read at the end of the day. It’s my favorite way to wind down, even though it usually results in me passing out with a book on my face!

  122. Sandy Weinstein says 8.14.18

this is wonderful. i love books. i am an avid book reader. read everynite before i go to bed.

  123. Megan says 8.14.18

I literally read any where during anytime that I have! Especially if it’s a good book, I’m reading in the car at the stop light (yes, I know-totally dangerous but I’m safe about it), in the morning, at lunch, at night… sometimes all through the night (my last all nighter was thanks to you and The Selection. Finished the whole series in 8 hours!). I typically read on my phone so I like this idea of reading in print. Actually prefer print but phones are just so convenient. I just got a library card so definitely going to do this!

  124. Betsy says 8.14.18

What a fantastic challenge! I read about 100 books a year (add 10 if I have a professional development course) and I love to read every time of day! I never thought I would be a kindle person, but I love those rare mornings I get up before everyone else and can stay cuddled in bed with my kindle on the night setting and read a few chapters. Paper books are my night-time go to ever since I read that it’s much easier to fall asleep without devices. Plus, I read to my kids for 20-30 minutes at bedtime so if I fail, they will help me get my reading in.

  125. Kathy LeTourneau says 8.14.18

I love to read and like you I prefer a book, rather than a tablet. We have a wonderful new and used bookstore, Grassroots in Reno, Nevada that is the best. Once a month they have a used book sale, fill a grocery bag for $5.00 from their warehouse. Reading really is a door to adventure….

  126. Cy says 8.14.18

I read every day too and it was my favorite childhood past time! I always read before bed, it relaxes me and it may be the only time of day, I can fit it in. Sunday afternoons is another time. Its my first day off after the long week and it helps me release stress. One of my favorite places to read is the cozy sunroom in my dad’s house. I’m often there on Sunday afternoons, reading the Sunday paper or something I’ve brought, my dad doing the crossword puzzle. If I’m at home I have a big comfy chair and an ottoman by the window. Book in my hand, Minne( my kitty) curled up on my lap. A little peace in this very hectic world
