I never like to presume that you all read here regularly, but if you do, (or if you follow my snaps), then you know that I am obsessed with eyelashes. Obsessed. I’ve tried nearly every mascara under the sun, regularly stop strangers to ask them about their own lash routines, and could probably talk about eyelashes for hours and hours. It’s a problem.
For the last few years, on and off… I had lash extensions. I had a standing appointment with Ebenezer in Koreatown, and every other Saturday morning I would pay them a visit, for what was the simultaneously the best (I love the results) and worst (but hate laying there for an hour+) part of my day. My lashes always looked amazing but it was a huge pain getting the extensions put on. Perfect lashes don’t come easy. You lay on a table as an aesthetician meticulously fills them in.. meticulously removing old extensions that had grown out and were too long, and painstakingly adding an extension to every single lash.
That being said, I loved them. What I liked most is that when I had them on, I didn’t really need to wear eye makeup, and when I woke up in the morning I felt really pretty without doing anything. But it was time consuming and expensive. (as an aside, Ebenezer is actually one of the more affordable options in Manhattan. It’s $94 the first time you go and if you get them filled within two weeks, $50 per fill. Prices go up accordingly, depending upon how much time you wait in between fills.) Also, I wanted my Saturday mornings back. So I stopped going. My wallet and bed thanked me, but my lashes didn’t. I’d coat them with as much mascara as they could hold, but it wasn’t the same.
So I decided to try a lash serum. I had tried a lot of lash serums, none of which worked particularly well. I’d heard good things about Neulash. Friends had raved about it and I knew that Julia from Gal Meets Glam used it (and her lashes are top notch). I mused about purchasing it in this post. It was your comments on that post that convinced me to take the plunge.
So here’s my review. It works. Really, really well. That said, you do need to be careful. There are a few important caveats that go with using this product that nobody told me, so I wanted to share them here.
- The results are not permanent, so once you achieve the results you’re looking for, you must continue using the product to maintain your newly long + thick lashes. Neulash works by conditioning the lashes and stopping the fall out pattern, which allows them to grow longer and makes your lashes appear thicker as there are more of them. Once you stop using the product, your lashes will resume normal fall out. So you must keep using it. This is not a big deal to me, I’ve gotten to a point where it’s just a part of my routine (I apply before brushing my teeth.) I even keep a smaller bottle in my travel bag so that I never miss a night. As long as you are disciplined, the results will continue (and get even better… I swear mine have recently started to get even longer and thicker.) It won’t kill you to miss a night or two, but consistency is important.
- Use as directed. The instructions say to apply it like liquid eyeliner… to the base of your lashes. It’s important to apply it really carefully. When I first started using the product, I wasn’t as careful, and then I noticed a random little lash growing a couple millimeters above the rest of my lashes. That freaked me out a little bit (but hey… it shows that the product works!) I pulled it out, and got really careful about how I applied it, and it hasn’t happened again.
- Don’t apply it too closely to the outer corners of your eyes. This sounds strange, but the lashes at the corner of my eyes grew so long that I experienced a lot of irritation because they were always getting stuck in the corner of my eye. It was really annoying.
Those are my only caveats. The product works exceptionally well and since using it religiously since the end of April, my lashes are much longer + thicker. I get them tinted and skip mascara most days… but if I do wear mascara, friends will ask if I got extensions again, which is probably my favorite compliment in the world.
There are two other lash products I swear by. For everyday use, I tint my lashes and apply a coat of Givenchy Mister Lash Booster. It gives my lashes a little extra shine + curl, and also helps with lash growth. Molly Miller from A Piece of Toast basically forced me to buy it when I visited her in Dallas (love her for it), and I’ll let you read her review of it here. The second is L’Oreal’s Miss Manga Rock Mascara. I am pretty much a drugstore mascara gal (they usually work just as good, if not better than their fancier looking counterparts) and this one is my new fave. It leaves your lashes crazy thick and super long. I call them my drag queen lashes… they’re that long and thick after using this. I do have to be careful when I apply it as my lashes get so long that they smudge if the mascara is still wet.
Also on the beauty front (albeit slightly off topic)… my favorites at Tata Harper have a big sale going on (ending tomorrow, 7/30 at midnight). Take 20% off all orders $100 and up, and for orders of $500 and up there are 3 free gift with purchases (Be Fierce lip + cheek tint, the 15ml Hydrating Floral Essence, and a 3ml Aromatic Stress Treatment). Tata’s products rarely go on sale, so this is the time to try it! (You can read more about my Tata obsession here, here, and here. I use her products almost exclusively when I’m not testing out new products to review here.)
This post is in no way sponsored, I just love the product and have been asked by a few of you to write a more formal review.
