DIY: Pearl Stud Collar

Today’s DIY is a little different than usual, as I’m collaborating with Kiley and Caitlin.  They are each styling their own pearl collar tops today on their blogs.  This certainly isn’t the first (or last) collar DIY that you’ll see, but I love this project because (if you ask me,) the pearl studs I used were pretty awesome.  As a crafts nerd, I geek out a little when I find a new supply I love, and these fit the bill.  I’m so pleased with how the end result turned out.  I’d been bored with this top, and now it’s become something really special that I’ll really look forward to wearing.  While gluing on each individual stud is a bit time consuming, it is otherwise incredibly easy to make and will withstand visits to the dry cleaner.  Read on for the tutorial; and when you’re done, be sure to stop by A Sequin Dress at Breakfast and Style Within Reach for some fabulous styling inspiration.  I love that they both styled the top so differently!

{I used this blouse from J.Crew, but this is a more affordable option!}

Materials – Where to Buy:  White Blouse // Jewel-It Glue (I stockpile this stuff, the hold is amazing.) // Pearl Studs

1.  Lay out your studs to determine how they will fit.  // 2.  Individually apply a drop of glue to each stud; and apply them to the collar.  // 3.  Gradually apply each stud; pressing down firmly.  // 4.  Continue to line up your studs in neat little rows.

5.  Continue along, in net little rows.  // 6.  Begin working from the other side.  // 7.  As you get closer to the middle section, you won’t be able to continue your pattern.  Fill this area in with studs in a uniform fashion.  // 8.  You are done!  Allow to dry overnight.

Don’t forget to pop by Kiley and Caitlin’s blogs for the interesting part – how to style the collar!

It’s true! Hope you give it a try!

  26. Kira says 6.14.12

for washing it the shirt post DIY, would you just have to spot clean?

    • graceatwood says 6.14.12

I would dry clean! Mine is silk so can’t go in the washer anyway.

  27. Pri says 6.15.12

awesomeeee shirt!!! I think I might do it & I rarely do DIY! (fear of screwing it up lmao). Anyways regarding cleaning if the collar shirt is just cotton do you think it would survive in the wash with the pearls on it?

    • graceatwood says 6.15.12

I don’t think it would be a good idea. The Fabri-tak is pretty strong, but I still wouldn’t put it in the washer. I’d wash it by hand if it’s cotton! 🙂

    • graceatwood says 6.15.12

Pri, I just found this glue. It says safe for the washer, so maybe you’ll want to try using this one instead!

  31. fernanda (brazil) says 7.14.12

hey grace, such a a great DIY!
i’m just wondering how many pearls you’ve used on it?
do you think it would look beautiful on a yellow candy shirt too?
    tks!

    xoxo

    • graceatwood says 7.15.12

Hi Fernanda, I hope this helps – I used 1.5 packages of the pearls that I linked to in the post. It was a lot – I’m not entirely sure of the exact number!

    • graceatwood says 7.15.12

And yes, I think it would look lovely on yello!
